Second Gear: Shifting to Success

Second Gear: Shifting to Success is a hands-on training program for young people aged 15-20 in the West Kimberley who are facing barriers to education, training, and employment.

Delivered in partnership with the Western Australia Police Force (WAPOL), the program gives new life to bicycles donated by WAPOL, which participants upcycle into fully functioning e-bikes. Many participants are referred through Youth Justice Services, with additional referrals from St Mary’s College Broome, Broome Senior High School, and the Broome Youth and Families Hub.

Over ten-week blocks, participants gain practical experience in mechanical repair, electrical work, and fabrication, while earning key workplace certifications such as First Aid, White Card, and Occupational Health & Safety. They also take part in industry visits, on-Country excursions, and wellbeing activities that strengthen real-world skills and confidence.

Through this immersive, community-led approach, Second Gear helps young people reconnect with learning, explore STEM and trade pathways, and contribute to sustainability and community wellbeing.
