E-Cruiser Program

The E-Cruiser Program aims to re-engage participants aged 14-18 in education and provide pathways to further training and employment. It targets non-school attenders, street-present youth, and those involved in criminal activity.

Males and females, 14-24

WHAT
Participants build their own electric scooters and metal pieces, including furniture. They undertake OH&S and scooter safety training and obtain certifications such as First Aid and White Card. The program covers rural skills, barista training, horticulture, and wellbeing workshops, including mental health and sexual health sessions. Participants have access to an on-site bush barber, explore Broome’s businesses through industry immersion, gain on-the-job experience, and take part in on-Country trips with catch and cook nutrition sessions, fishing, and crabbing.

WHEN
The program is operating in Term 4 of 2024 and is coordinated by Broome Youth and Families Hub with support from The Skill Engineer Ltd

WHERE
41 Blackman Street, Broome, Western Australia, 6725

TSE’s E-Cruiser Program aims to assist young people by supporting them on a non-traditional trade pathway. The program seeks to empower and enthuse participants, fostering their creativity and providing them with opportunities in engineering, horticulture, barista training, and learning valuable life skills and additional certifications for employability. By crafting their own e-scooter, participants gain a means of transport and independence.

The program provides a supportive and safe environment, operating during school terms with flexible entry and exit points. In addition to formal training, participants receive case management support to address barriers related to entering the workforce and managing family, culture, and community responsibilities.

The program takes place in an engineering workshop, on a social enterprise block, providing participants with hands-on experience. They also benefit from work placements in engineering, horticulture and cafe settings and field trips to observe various industries. To boost confidence and enhance employability, participants engage in work readiness, resume, and literacy and numeracy workshops.

Upon completion of the program, participants receive ongoing support from the Broome Youth and Families Hub Reconnect Program. They are assisted in finding employment or returning to school. Our youth workers provide the pastoral and wrap-around care necessary for participants to feel empowered and succeed.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our community, partners, and supporters who make this program possible, including the Kimberley Development Commission, Broome International Airport, Gro Foundation, Lotterywest, Broome Youth and Families Hub, Evero Engineering, Kimberley Coffee Company, North Regional TAFE, Aboriginal Training Services team, Jobs & Skills Centre North Regional, Australian Government Department of Education, Kimberley Personnel, and Broome Senior High School.

Note on Program Naming
Our program, known as “Roots & Brews,” is also referred to as the “E-Cruiser Program” within our organisation. This name highlights the key components of our initiative, including the crafting of electric scooters, horticulture and barista training. Both names represent the same comprehensive program designed to empower and support young people on their non-traditional trade pathways.
